Microphone streams sound, but refuses to be recorded?

What setting could possibly be making it so that although my microphone's sound is there as is streaming through the output, the computer mysteriously refuses to record it (in any recording app--even the simplest ones like Sound Recorder). I have a Realtek HD Audio card for some Godforsaken reason.
